Zappa

A sensitive, loyal, cuddly, and incredibly smart 6 year old cattle dog/border collie mix.
He is in need of a new home because he has been increasingly struggling with our unpredictable and rambunctious toddler. Our small space makes it especially challenging to navigate this already precarious dynamic and we believe Zappa will do best in a home without small children.
Zappa was adopted from Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, MA in March of 2021 after he and hundreds of other animals were emergency evacuated from a shelter in Austin, Texas during winter storm Uri. Due to the nature of the relocation, Zappa and many other animals arrived without paperwork, so very little is known about his first 2 years of life.

At the time of adoption, he was anxious and was often pacing in the shelter, unable to settle. He connected quickly and easily with his new parents and enjoyed adventures in the neighborhood and on hikes. A few months into his adoption he underwent a neuter surgery that resulted in complications (which have since resolved completely). During this time, he became increasingly more reactive to people and dogs, barking and lunging in an attempt to create distance from them.
We have since worked with multiple trainers and Zappa has made incredible progress. He loves predictability and consistency and does very well with a stable routine. He continues to struggle with other dogs so will do best as an only pet, though he has been able to make two beautiful friendships with other dogs after some slow and careful introductions. We also think Zappa will do best in a more rural setting or at the least in a home with a fenced in yard. He likes to be right near his people when they are home but also enjoys quiet time alone when no one is home. He is muzzle trained and very obedient, but does need management when meeting new people.
The combination of being VERY food motivated and impressively smart makes Zappa a dream dog for anyone who enjoys dog training and is familiar with supporting dogs with reactivity challenges. We adore Zappa and it’s very important to us that he goes to the right home, so please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or to share a bit about yourself.
