About Hugh
** Adopted **
Hugh is a six year old red and white border collie, weighing in at approximately 40 pounds. Hugh found himself in rescue due to humans that were allergic to him in his previous home. Hugh is friendly and affectionate, loves to get pets and give kisses. He will also give kisses upon request. Attention of any kind is his goal.

He loves kids, is always happy to see them and likes to sit as closely as possible to them. He likes dogs, and will invite his senior foster brother to do zoomies with him. Hugh likes to play fetch and frisbee. If his foster brother gets the ball or frisbee first, Hugh is respectful of the seniority and backs off.
Hugh likes to take hikes and explore on a long ribbon lead, he checks in often to make sure the other end walker is not lost. He pulls hard if walking on a regular leash, so is likely not suited for a home with adopters who are elderly or can be thrown off balance easily.

Hugh’s recall is excellent and when he is in his forever home will easily transition to off leash adventures with guidance and supervision. Hugh has exhibited no interest in the occasional walker or biker going by one the road near his foster home, nor to any wildlife he may observe on his walks.

Hugh does have a couple of quirks. He eats faster than the speed of light and does not have a soft mouth when it comes to treats. Hugh barks whenever someone(adult) enters a room, even if he has just been sitting with them moments before, He does not exhibit this behavior with children even if they come and go a hundred times in a few minutes. Different strategies are being tried to address this behavior, but his adopter will need to continue working on this and determine what positive training methods works best in their home.
Hugh is a fast learner and a week ago was in the process of learning not to counter surf, he is now 90% counter surfing free. He will try to crawl in your lap is you are having a snack anywhere other than at the table and ongoing correction is to be expected. Hugh is very smart and agility, nosework or rally classes would be fun for him. Hugh is a wonderful companion and a great addition to any home.
Hugh’s need for a fence will be considered on a case by case basis to ensure his safety.
Hugh is being fostered in midcoastal Maine.
