About Rainy

Rainy is a three-year-old purebred male border collie. He is neutered, up-to-date on his shots, heartworm negative and microchipped. He is also housebroken and crate trained. Rainy was purchased as a young puppy and lived in an apartment with a small dog and two adults. The family recently had a baby and realized that they are no longer able to give Rainy enough time and attention.

Rainy has not been around children on a regular basis. He might be okay with older, dog savvy children.

Rainy is a very sweet dog with low/medium drive. He loves belly rubs and games of tug. He does display some mild anxiety when people leave the house, but will settle quietly in a crate with a Kong when left alone. When new people enter the foster home, he is quick to wag his tail and say hello by jumping up. Rainy is currently learning to stay on a mat when there is activity in the house.

Rainy’s shares his foster home with two male border collies and a small flock of chickens. He will play with the younger border collie a couple times per day in the house. His play style is rough and growly. He will stop playing if the other dog is not interested.

He has some resource guarding tendencies with food and toys around the dogs in the foster home. Rainy would be happy as an only dog with an active owner and may also do well with small, low energy dogs. A meet and greet before an adoption is recommended.

When he is outside, Rainy is interested in herding the other dogs when they are playing fetch. He can be redirected by giving him his own toy. He has also shown interest in chasing cars and will run and bark at airplanes and large birds flying overhead. Based on his behavior around the chickens, he appears to have a strong prey drive. He also likes to hunt for mice in a woodpile and outdoor storage area. He has not been exposed to cats and would probably do best in a cat-free home.

Since Rainy has interest in small animals/birds and moving vehicles, he is currently not a good candidate for off leash walks. A fenced yard will be needed for Rainy to keep him safe from vehicles and prevent him from running off on his own adventures. Obedience training is highly recommended for Rainy and may be required in certain cases.

Rainy knows basic obedience cues such as sit, down and stay. He is very good at waiting to go out the door at home and exiting the car after a ride. He readily jumps into his crate for a ride in the car. He will “herd” passing vehicles while in the crate. A cover over the crate helps him relax in the car and prevents him from obsessing over the movement of other vehicles.

Rainy is a wonderful, loving, low/medium drive border collie. His ideal home will have a fenced yard where he can safely play and a patient owner dedicated to training him and giving him a job.

Rainy is being fostered in Maine.

*Note: the fence requirement may be waived depending on the situation.
